The United Arab Emirates were founded on 2 December 1971, when six emirates united under the leadership of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Ras Al Khaimah joined in early 1972, completing the federation of seven emirates.

A country dressed in national colours

In the days before National Day, also known as Eid Al Etihad, buildings, streets and cars are decorated in red, green, white and black. Schools and offices hold celebrations, and many residents wear traditional clothing.
